Will Eisner was born March 6, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, his career lasted almost comic about eight decades - since the dawn of comicbooks themselves (which he was one of the founding fathers), by creating graphic novels (of which his was the first) to the advent of digital comics. There are some who refer to him as "the Orson Welles of comics." In fact, one of the most prestigious awards in the comic industry is named for him. The Eisner Awards (considered by many as the " Oscars "of comics industry), is awarded to the Comic-Con International in San Diego. Eisner was an innovator in the development of narrative and visual language of comics (coining the term" sequential art "). Among his Many characters, Eisner created The Spirit, John Law, Lady Luck, Mr. Mystic, Uncle Sam, Blackhawk, Sheena and many others.
On the occasion of his body immence work and contribution to industry immeasureable, MoCCA (The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art) The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art - MoCCA - is currently hosting an exhibition of Will Eisner - Will Eisner's New York: From the Spirit to the modern graphic novel, starring the incomparable work of one of the great masters of this industry. The exhibition will run from 2 March to June 2011 30 and is organized by Denis Kitchen (which Eisner republished lot of work in his Kitchen Sink Press in the 70's & 80'') and Danny Fingeroth (former editor of Marvel Comics, the author of Superman on the couch and other books about comics, and vice-president of education for MoCCA).
This exhibition highlights New York City as viewed by Eisner and are reflected throughout his work. It includes many of his comics artworkfrom Spirit and his classic graphic novel work, including a contract with God and the heart of the storm. There are also lots of original paintings by Eisner, and many famous designers who were influenced by him - including Harvey Kurtzman, Art Spiegelman, and the current beneficiary Eisner, Paul Rivoche.
The exhibition began with a gathering of comic profenssionals many (including artists whose work has graced the walls of the museum alongside Eisner), and a special screening of Andrew Jon Cooke winning 2007 documentary, Will Eisner Portrait of a Sequential Artist. The historical context for the many art pieces in the exhibition (over 100) is provided for by a wall contributed bopth of the exhibition curators, as well as a slide show running at constant that relates the evolution of the work of Eisner.
The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art is chartered by the New York State Education Department and is located at 594 Broadway, Suite 401, (btwn. Houston and Prince), New York, NY 10012 . The opening hours of the Museum are Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. General Admission is $ 5.00.
